Klondike 2007

by Chase Newton

On January 13, 2007 the Webelos II den went to the Klondike derby.  The forecast was rain, but during the time we were there, we felt nothing but sprinkles.  The people that came were Bryant Atkins and his mom, Snowden Kindler and his dad, Matthew McGill and his dad, and my mom and me.  Instead of using a sled, our patrol, the Penguin patrol, made a travois, which is a Sioux Indian form of transportation.  Our first station was a memory game, and we got 12 points.  Then we went to a knots station where our fastest square knot was about 5 seconds, and our fastest bowline was about 9 seconds.

Next, we went to the sawing station, then the campsite station, first aid, judging, and the scavenger hunt.  For lunch we had hotdogs, which we cooked over the fire.  The last station we had to do was the slingshots.  After the Kindlers and the Atkins left, we just sat by the fire.  For dinner we cooked chili and roasted marshmallows.  The weather was great to camp out overnight.  We are grateful to Boy Scout Troop 241 for hosting our den!
